AI: The Brahmastra of Modern Journalism

Dr. Naveen Anand Joshi

The strength of India’s democracy is not measured solely by its Parliament and State Assemblies. Its true foundation lies in the Fourth Pillar—Journalism—which serves as the vital bridge between the people and governance. Yet, the irony is that especially in rural areas, when journalists knock on the doors of government offices, they are often met with neglect and humiliation. From clerks to collectors and commissioners, many officials take advantage of the fact that most journalists do not possess in-depth knowledge of the “legal and constitutional responsibilities” that these officials hold towards the public.

As a result—Sometimes they are intimidated under the threat of law, sometimes their petitions are outrightly rejected, and sometimes their efforts are nullified by deliberately stalling files.

This struggle of journalism has existed since time immemorial. The journalist’s pen has always clashed with inequality, injustice, and indifference. But now, the scenario is changing.

Artificial Intelligence as the Brahmastra
Just as Sage Narad, regarded as the universe’s first correspondent, spread truth and news across all realms, today Artificial Intelligence (AI) has descended as a divine weapon for modern journalists.

Now, a journalist need not ask an officer—
“What obligations are you bound to fulfill towards the public?”

“What response must a Collector give during public hearings?” Because today, within moments, on a mobile phone or laptop, the journalist can obtain all such information through AI. Constitutional provisions, government notifications, court judgments, and legal interpretations—everything is instantly available.

A Clear Message to the Administration
The administration must now realise that it is no longer possible to “fool” journalists. Any evasive or unlawful conduct by an official can now be exposed in the blink of an eye. Not only this, such exposure can raise serious questions on their conduct and even affect their Annual Confidential Report (ACR).

Journalism today is no longer limited to merely asking questions or filing reports. It has now assumed the form of an AI-empowered consciousness, moving towards transparency in governance and empowerment of the people.

The New Era of Journalism
Today, the journalist’s weapons are not confined to just pen, camera, and microphone. They now wield AI as their Brahmastra—enhancing their investigative power manifold, offering them immediate legal safeguards, compelling governance towards transparency and accountability, and accelerating common citizens’ access to justice. This new age of journalism is not only speeding up the flow of information but also infusing it with the elixir of truth and justice.

A Global Message
Artificial Intelligence has bestowed journalism with unprecedented dimensions. A journalist today is neither alone nor helpless. In their hands lies a force that can shake the very slumber of injustice and corruption.

When truth and technology unite, no injustice can endure. This is the message not just for India, but for the entire world.
